Skillway Celebrates
On Saturday October 4th 2008, friends, supportersand students past and present came together to celebrate 10 years of operation of the Skillway Project. It was a very successful event with over a hundred people attending. It also gave us the oppotunity to recognise our first director who sadly died earlier this year, Mr Crispin Hill. A plaque was unvailed by his wife in recognition of his committed service. During the afternoon there was also a presentation of The Crispin Hill Progress Award to a Skillway student. This is a new award to be pesented annually to a student who, in the opinion of the staff and volunteers has made a significant achievment during their time at Skillway.
Visit from Waverley Borough Council June 2008 Mary Orton, Chief Executive of Waverley came to see the work of Skillway recently and was very complimentary about the efforts of the craftspersons working with the students to produce such fine project work. She also was very supportive of the approach of Skillway towards students who need this kind of practical outlet. We thank her for her kind words and look forward to continued support from Waverley BC .
The High Sheriff of Surrey visits Skillway May 2008
The High Sheriff recently visited Skillway to meet some of the students and view their work. Whilst there she also discussed the work of Skillway with some of the Trustees.
Open College Network Success April 2008
During the past two years, in addition to over 100 normal school based students achieving accreditation, we have had the following accreditation success with students not attending full time schooling or attending Special Needs Schools. Pupil Referral Units and other Not at School students - 4 students received 7 awards. Other Part Time School Students - 4 students received 4 awards. Students from Special Needs Schools - 9 students received 12 awards. Two Kurdish Refugees from Iraq each received an award. We have also been able to secure local apprenticeships for 2 of our students. All these students have often had special difficulties to overcome, so well done everyone!
Two volunteers from Skillway receive awards for Volunteering in July 2007. One seen below receiving his certificate from a student, teaches woodwork twice a week, the other a long standing committee member and Treasurer. We owe our thanks to both! End of Term July 2007 The restored and working 1940's water pump being returned to the Rural Life Centre in Tilford. Skillway "Open Day" Saturday 16th June. Despite rain showers, we had a great turn out to our Open Day which coincided with the Godalming Festival. We had several of our current students attend, who worked at their new found skills to impress parents and visitors alike.
July 2006 - New crafts for Autumn 2006 and some fun days out! Skillway is looking at piloting two new crafts in the Autumn term 2006. These are Jewellery making and leather craft, so watch this space for more infomation as the term progresses. Meanwhile here are some pictures of our end of term outings with two groups, one to the River Wey to test the Skillway canoe and another to Dunsfold Park to test run our Go-kart. Both had glorious weather and fun was had by all ! January 2006 - A meet the marines day! A group of our lads recently had the opportunity to take part in a "Meet the Marines" Day at their HQ in Poole, Dorset. This involved a day of vigorous activity where they could get the real flavour of the marine lifestyle with such activities as: riding in all terrain vehicles and high speed inflatable rafts around Poole Harbour, absailing, wall climbing, unarmed combat and a real favourite - paint balling. Whether any of our lads go on to thinknig of the armed forces as a career, or not, I think that the day will stay with them and help them realise what they can achieve October 2005 - our new website is launched and we look forward to greeting our first new visitors! September 2005 - A visit from the Mayor of Waverley A recent visit from the mayor of Waverley to support our students achievements and all the work that Skillway does with these youngsters.
